What's the Best Hearing Aid?
This question may seem simple, but it doesn't have an easy answer. Hearing aid technology evolves rapidly, with manufacturers constantly introducing new and unique features. At Audiology Doctors of New Jersey, our experienced team stays current with this fast-moving field through continuing education and trade shows. We bring deep expertise in the leading hearing aid brands we carry, helping us understand what's available and determine the right solution for you.
This is why working with our skilled audiologists, rather than making an online purchase, can make such a difference. We bring the knowledge and experience needed to analyze the current market and find the hearing aids that will work best for your specific needs.
Hearing Aid Models
All different designs have their strengths, and we like to say that "what's good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander." It depends on your hearing loss and lifestyle, although cost is not affected by which style (outward appearance).
Some of the variables to consider are:
- Are you a very active person?
- Do you need to wear the hearing aids while playing tennis or golf?
- Do you want the most invisible hearing aids possible?
- What features are you willing to forgo for the sake of ultra-miniaturization?
- Do you have mild or severe hearing loss?
- What, if anything, have you worn before?
- What were its strengths and possible shortcomings?
Custom-fit hearing aids are especially subtle and can be custom-colored to match your skin tone. These hearing aids include invisible-in-canal (IIC), completely-in-canal (CIC), in-the-canal (ITC), and in-the-ear (ITE) styles.
Other hearing aids place the amplifier, microphones and battery behind your ear and direct the sound through a wire or tube to a miniature loudspeaker placed deep into the ear canal. These styles are commonly called include receiver-in-canal (RIC) and slim tube behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids.
Newer circuitry developments are coming out in the Receiver-In-Canal (RIC) style. They do not plug the ear and are conducive to active patients. They deliver a high degree of physical comfort and the natural acoustics.
Concerned about cosmetics? Not laughing at the punch line of a friend’s joke can be more obvious than having a little “amplifier” resting on top of your ear.
How Long Do Hearing Aids Last?
The lifespan of hearing aids depends on the person, their lifestyle, and the design of the device. With simple, ongoing maintenance and regular cleanings, hearing aids can work for many years. At Audiology Doctors of New Jersey, we've seen well-maintained devices function for over 10 years.
But hearing aid technology advances quickly, and newer models offer significant improvements compared to those from just five years ago. That's why we suggest considering an upgrade around the 3-5 year mark. Even if your current hearing aids work well, you might benefit from new technological features. Plus, your older set can serve as a backup for activities like swimming or tennis!
Modern Hearing Aid Technology
Digital hearing aids have transformed hearing care with precise, customizable sound processing. These advanced devices can automatically adjust to your surroundings, delivering optimal sound in any setting.
Today's hearing aids are smaller and more reliable, with smart features that connect to your daily life. Through Bluetooth connectivity, you can:
- Adjust volume and settings from your smartphone
- Take phone calls directly through your hearing aids
- Listen to music, podcasts, and TV audio
- Use your phone as a remote microphone for better hearing in restaurants
- Locate misplaced hearing aids using your phone's GPS
These innovations make hearing aids more versatile and user-friendly than ever before. At Audiology Doctors of New Jersey, we'll help you master these features to enhance your hearing experience.
